CPT-B-smallThe CPT-B Combo tool must be the top most tool in the digital output PL string.  It provides a combination of functions and sensors, hence the name.  The sensors include high-resolution pressure and temperature measurements.  In addition, it provides digital wireline telemetry and power supply functions.

Power is transmitted from the surface through the monocable wireline from the surface panel at high voltage and low current.  This minimizes line losses through the cable.  This high voltage is stepped down by a factor of at least four times to supply the other tools in the PL string.

Both the power supply and digital telemetry have been designed to operate on up to 35,000 feet of 7/32” monocable and have seen success in ultra-deep offshore wells.  The PL string can also operate with conductor-slickline in situations of very high pressure producing wells.

The Platinum-Resistance temperature sensor samples the temperature of fluids flowing past the tool with a resolution of 0.001 degrees F.  A Silicon-on-Sapphire strain-gauge pressure sensor measures to an accuracy of 0.01 psi with a time response of only 0.1 seconds which allows sensitive analysis of flow regimes in turbulent and cross-flow situations.  The accuracy is similar to the performance of Quartz gauges, but with greater ruggedness, lower cost and no thermal lag.

The CPT-B interrogates up to 11 compatible sensors connected below it in the PL string at a rate of 16 times per second.  Each sensor is programmed internally with a unique digital address.
